Questions

The things Irish businesses ask about ThingSIM IoT SIM cards, before and after ordering.

Before you order

When does billing start?

Billing starts when you activate, or automatically 30 days after we despatch your SIM (30 days after it is issued, for an eSIM); we email you at least 5 days before. SIMs arrive inactive, and a SIM goes live the next working day after activation.

Physical SIM or eSIM?

Either, at the same price: €2.49 per SIM, once. We recommend an eSIM where the device supports it: it arrives as a QR code in the portal once your order is confirmed, with no postage and no import charges. Physical SIMs come as a trio card: pop out mini, micro or nano to suit your device. They are posted from the UK to addresses in Ireland, the rest of the EU and the UK; the carrier may charge import VAT, customs duty or a handling fee on arrival, which you pay.

Which networks?

The Ireland multi-network plan roams across Vodafone, Three and eir and uses whichever is strongest where the device is, in every county. Devices that cross into Northern Ireland or travel elsewhere in Europe need a plan that covers where they go: Europe plans are on the plans page, with 20 GB on request; for Northern Ireland, ask us which plan covers it. If a device is installed in one of the border counties, test the signal on site before you roll out.

How many can I order?

Up to 25 SIMs per order request: press Order on a plan, tell us how many, and we confirm by email and set them up. For more, talk to us and we will set the fleet up with you.

Do ThingSIMs support LTE-M and NB-IoT?

Yes, as well as 4G data and SMS. Check that the device's module supports the technology it is designed to use, and that it is available from a network where the device will be installed.

Is an IoT SIM the same as an M2M SIM?

Yes. M2M (machine to machine) is the older name for the same thing: a data SIM for a device rather than a phone. Every ThingSIM is an IoT or M2M SIM, billed monthly per active SIM with no contract.

Once you have SIMs

What happens when a SIM runs out of data?

It pauses, rather than running up a bill. You can move that SIM to a larger plan straight away, paying only the difference for the rest of the month, or leave it until the allowance resets.

What if a payment is late?

If a payment is late, we email you and give you at least 3 days to pay. If it is still unpaid, your SIMs may be suspended until you pay, and no new SIMs can be activated while the account is in arrears.

Can I change a SIM’s plan?

Yes, SIM by SIM from the portal. Upgrades apply straight away; downgrades from the start of the next month.

Do you do fixed IP addresses?

Every SIM gets a private IP at no charge. A static public IP is €9.49 a month per SIM. For private networking, see the extras.
