Teltonika Routers and Gateways: SIM Setup Guide
Teltonika's RUT and RUTX routers and TRB gateways are among the most widely stocked industrial 4G routers in Ireland. A ThingSIM goes in, the APN goes in RutOS, and the router roams across the Irish networks to whichever is strongest where it is installed.

Setting up a ThingSIM in RutOS
The APN goes in Network → Mobile → General. Copy it from the SIM's page in the ThingSIM portal; there is no username or password.
- Activate the SIM in the ThingSIM portal, then power the router off and insert it in SIM 1.
- Open the router's WebUI and go to Network → Mobile → General.
- In the APN configuration for the SIM's interface (mob1s1a1 for SIM 1), switch Auto APN off and enter the APN from the portal.
- Set Authentication type to None and leave the username and password blank.
- In SIM configuration, make sure Deny data roaming is off. A ThingSIM always connects as a roaming SIM.
- Save & Apply. The Mobile page then shows the operator and the data connection.
Two SIMs for failover
Two-SIM models switch under Network → Mobile → SIM Switch, on triggers such as weak signal, no network or a failed data connection. Leave the On roaming trigger off for a ThingSIM, or the router will keep switching away from it.
Checking it works
Network → Mobile shows the active SIM, the operator, the network type and whether data is connected. Teltonika RMS shows the same remotely, and the ThingSIM portal shows the SIM's usage.

Does a ThingSIM work in a Teltonika RUT241?
Yes. The RUT241, RUT200, RUTX and RUTM ranges and the TRB gateways all take a ThingSIM. Put the SIM in, enter the APN from the portal in RutOS and the router connects on the strongest of Vodafone, Three and eir.
Can I put two ThingSIMs in a dual-SIM Teltonika for failover?
You can, but one Ireland multi-network ThingSIM already roams across Vodafone, Three and eir, so a second SIM mainly helps where a different provider or a private APN is wanted. Each active SIM is billed separately.
How much data does a Teltonika router used for failover need?
A router that only carries traffic when the fixed line drops usually fits in 1 GB a month, €2.49 on Ireland multi-network. Watch the first month's usage in the portal and change plan if needed.
Will a Teltonika router in the border counties pick up a Northern Ireland network?
It can. In Donegal, Leitrim, Cavan, Monaghan and Louth a router may see Northern Ireland networks, which are outside the EU's roam-like-at-home rules. Test the signal on site before you install, and check under Network → Mobile that the operator shown is one of Vodafone, Three and eir. If it is not, talk to us before the router goes live so we can agree the right plan for it.
