Teltonika RUT951 SIM card setup

Device setup Published

Set up a ThingSIM data SIM in a Teltonika RUT951 4G router in Ireland: SIM size and plan, the RutOS APN and roaming settings, failover and troubleshooting.

The Teltonika RUT951 is a dual-SIM 4G router with Wi-Fi for branch and IoT failover. It takes a mini SIM, and a ThingSIM connects on whichever of Vodafone, Three and eir is strongest once the APN is set in RutOS.

Specifications and menu paths checked against Teltonika's own documentation on 3 November 2026; sources are listed at the end. Menus can move between firmware versions, so if yours differs, follow the manual for your version.

What the RUT951 is

A dual-SIM router with four Ethernet ports and Wi-Fi. It is a current model and replaced the RUT950.

Which ThingSIM suits the RUT951

Compatible. It supports LTE Cat 4, with 3G and 2G fallback. Teltonika lists LTE bands 1, 3, 7, 8, 20 and 28 (or 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20 and 40, depending on the version) for the versions sold in Europe, which cover the 4G bands used by the Irish networks. The RUT951 has two mini SIM (2FF) slots, so order a physical ThingSIM and use the mini size. Some versions add an eSIM.

As a failover router that only carries traffic when the fixed line drops, Ireland multi-network 1 GB at €2.49 a month usually fits. For a site where it is the main connection for cameras or several devices, start on 5 GB at €8.99 and check usage after the first month.

Insert the SIM

  1. Activate the SIM in the ThingSIM portal when you are ready to test; billing starts that day.
  2. With the power disconnected, push the SIM holder button with the SIM needle and pull the holder out.
  3. Place the mini SIM in the holder as the drawing in Teltonika's quick start guide shows, slide it back in, and fit the antennas.
  4. Connect the power. On sites with heavy vibration, Teltonika suggests a thin layer of dielectric grease on the SIM contacts.

Set up mobile data in RutOS

  1. Log in to the WebUI at http://192.168.1.1 (user admin, password on the label) and go to Network → Mobile → General.
  2. In Interface mob1s1a1 APN configuration (SIM 1), switch Auto APN off. In the APN field, enter the APN shown in your ThingSIM portal when you activate the SIM.
  3. Set Authentication type to None and leave the username and password blank.
  4. In SIM configuration, leave Deny data roaming off. A ThingSIM always connects to Irish networks as a roaming SIM.
  5. Leave the PIN field empty unless the SIM has a PIN, then click Save & Apply.

Two SIMs and failover

Two-SIM models use one SIM at a time. Rules are set on the SIM Switch tab of Network → Mobile, with conditions such as weak signal, no network, network denied, data connection failure and data limit. Do not enable the On roaming condition for a ThingSIM: it would switch away from the SIM every time it connects, because a ThingSIM always roams. One Ireland multi-network ThingSIM already roams across Vodafone, Three and eir, so a second SIM mainly helps where a different provider or a private APN is wanted. Each active SIM is billed separately.

Check it is working

Status → Network → Mobile shows the SIM card state, operator, network type, connected band, signal quality (RSSI, RSRP, RSRQ, SINR) and the data connection state, with buttons to restart the connection or switch SIM slot. Teltonika RMS shows the same remotely, and the ThingSIM portal shows the SIM's usage.

Troubleshooting

  • Operator shows but data does not connect: check Deny data roaming is off and Auto APN is off with the portal's APN entered on the interface for the slot the SIM is actually in.
  • SIM not detected: power off, reseat the SIM in the holder the way the quick start drawing shows, and check it is the mini size.
  • Signal but no data: check the SIM is activated in the ThingSIM portal, the APN matches the one shown in the portal exactly with no spaces, and data roaming is allowed. Then work through signal but no data in order.
  • It worked, then stopped: look at the SIM's usage in the portal. A ThingSIM pauses when it reaches its monthly allowance; upgrade the plan straight away or wait for the reset.
  • Near the border: in Donegal, Leitrim, Cavan, Monaghan or Louth a device can pick up a Northern Ireland network, which is outside the Ireland plan. Test the signal on site, and if the device may cross the border or latch on to a Northern Ireland network, see IoT SIMs for Europe and Northern Ireland.

Common questions

Does a ThingSIM work in a Teltonika RUT951?

Yes. The RUT951's LTE bands cover the Irish networks. Put the SIM in, switch Auto APN off and enter the APN shown in your ThingSIM portal, and leave Deny data roaming off.

What size SIM does the RUT951 take?

A mini SIM (2FF), the largest size on the ThingSIM trio card.

Does this router fall back to 2G?

Yes, it supports 2G as well as 3G and 4G, and ThingSIM SIMs work on 2G. No Irish operator has announced a date to switch off 2G, so 2G fallback still has value here; 3G is going instead, with Vodafone's 3G already off and eir switching its 3G off from October 2026.
