SIMs for vehicle and asset tracking.
A tracker is only as good as its last report. ThingSIM keeps vans, trailers, plant and containers reporting across Ireland, on whichever network is strongest where they've stopped.
What the kit needs
Coverage on the move
Vehicles cross from one network's patch to another's all day. A multi-network SIM follows the strongest signal rather than dropping out between towns.
Small, frequent reports
A position every few minutes is a tiny amount of data. The smallest plans cover most trackers; move one up a size if it also sends camera or engine data.
Pause what's parked
Seasonal plant and spare trailers don't need to report all year. Pause their SIMs from the portal and bring them back when they go out again.
How it connects
50 MB, Ireland multi-network, one SIM per tracker.
Vehicles that work elsewhere in Europe need a Europe plan; for Northern Ireland, ask us which plan covers the route.
Questions people ask
What SIM card does a GPS tracker need? Is it an M2M SIM?
A data-only IoT SIM (also called an M2M SIM) in the size the tracker takes. Every ThingSIM is a trio card with mini, micro and nano sizes in one, or an eSIM, so one SIM fits whichever tracker it goes into.
How much data does a vehicle tracker use?
Very little. A position every few minutes is a tiny amount of data, so 50 MB (€0.99 a month) covers most trackers. Trackers that also send camera or engine data need more; move a SIM up a size from the portal when you see what it uses.
Will the SIM keep working as the vehicle moves around Ireland?
Yes. Ireland multi-network SIMs roam across Vodafone, Three and eir and follow the strongest signal, so a tracker keeps reporting as it crosses from one network's coverage to another's.
Will a tracker work when a vehicle crosses into Northern Ireland?
Ireland multi-network plans are for devices in Ireland. Northern Ireland is served by the UK networks, outside the EU's roam-like-at-home rules, so vehicles that cross the border, including regular runs through the border counties, need a plan that covers the UK networks. Tell us the routes and we will confirm which plan covers them.
Do tracker SIMs work elsewhere in Europe?
Vehicles that work on the continent need a Europe plan, priced per active SIM on the plans page. For Britain or Northern Ireland, tell us the countries they go to and we will confirm which plan covers them.
Can I pause SIMs in vehicles that are parked up?
Yes. Pause the SIM for seasonal plant or a spare trailer from the portal and bring it back when it goes out again.
Can I fit SIMs to trackers before they are installed?
Yes. SIMs arrive switched off, so you can fit them on the bench and switch each one on from the portal, or through the API, on the day the tracker goes into a vehicle. Billing for that SIM starts then, or automatically 30 days after we despatch it if it is still off, and we email you at least 5 days before.
