Order 5 GBPlan mobile data for site cameras, welfare units and temporary equipment on an Irish building site, and decide what to do with SIMs between phases.
Connect a construction site by listing the equipment that needs mobile data, separating camera traffic from lighter tasks, and testing at the actual installation positions. Ireland multi-network 5 GB is a starting allowance for a controlled site workload at €8.99 per active SIM per month. It is not an unlimited connection for every camera and person on site.
A welfare unit, temporary camera and small status logger can have very different requirements. Decide which devices need their own SIM and which will share a router before estimating data. The construction sector page covers this use case.
Write down what must be connected during the current phase and what will be added later. Include camera uploads, remote viewing, site administration and any staff access you intend to permit. Keep optional downloads separate so they do not quietly consume the allowance needed for essential equipment.
Check who is responsible for each device and its application. A working SIM does not configure the camera service or decide who may use a welfare unit's router. Agree those responsibilities before equipment arrives, particularly when several contractors share the site. If the site cameras are monitored, the installer and the monitoring centre need their own PSA licences; that side of the job sits with them, not with the SIM.
Use the following decision table as a starting worksheet. Replace each suggested check with the actual device settings and expected usage for your project.
| Equipment | What to count | Installation check |
|---|---|---|
| Site camera | Images, clips and remote viewing | Confirm an upload from the final mounting point |
| Welfare unit router | Every permitted connected device | Test inside the finished unit |
| Temporary logger | Report size and frequency | Check readings arrive at the destination |
| Remote maintenance connection | Sessions and any downloads | Confirm the required inbound or outbound access |
| Kit waiting for the next phase | No current service requirement | Keep spare SIMs inactive; cease SIMs not needed again |
Ireland multi-network roams across Vodafone, Three and eir and uses whichever is strongest where the device is. This gives temporary kit more network options as it moves from one site to the next, whether that is a city-centre block in Dublin or a one-off build in the West. It still needs testing at each installation position.
Try router and camera positions before permanent mounting. Metal cabins, concrete structures and equipment enclosures are reasons to compare alternatives carefully. Test with doors and covers in their normal operating position. If the site layout changes, repeat the same data task rather than assuming the original result still describes the installation.
On a site in one of the border counties (Donegal, Leitrim, Cavan, Monaghan or Louth), check during testing which network the router reports. Near the border a device can pick up a Northern Ireland network; talk to us if that is likely, so we can agree the right plan for it.
ThingSIM does not supply antennas or site surveys. Ask the hardware supplier or installer about an external antenna where the device supports one. Keep the tested cable and mounting arrangement in the record so a later relocation does not become an unexplained configuration change.
Every ThingSIM gets a private IP at no charge. Mobile data on that address cannot accept unsolicited inbound connections. If the camera's application initiates its own connection to a service, check that arrangement with the camera supplier and test it separately from direct inbound viewing.
A static public IP is €9.49 a month per SIM and is directly reachable from the internet. The customer must secure the device. Confirm access controls with whoever manages the camera or router before enabling direct access; a public address does not provide those controls for you.
Private networking is another option, with private APN, IPSec VPN and cloud interconnect available as extras. Reaching a 4G camera remotely helps distinguish the access requirement before you select an extra.
For cameras, count the size and number of uploads and add expected viewing. For a shared router, include all permitted devices. Use a representative day and allow for setup and firmware downloads rather than multiplying a quiet hour by the whole month.
The listed plans are 50 MB, 250 MB, 1 GB and 5 GB. Choose a smaller allowance for a small logger if its measured use supports it. If a camera or shared router needs more than 5 GB, do not assume the recommended plan will cover it; review the workload and discuss the requirement through contact.
The portal shows usage. At the allowance limit the SIM pauses rather than charging overage, so someone on the project needs to watch the connection during busy periods. A SIM on a smaller plan can upgrade immediately, paying only the difference for the rest of the month. If it is already on 5 GB, the largest listed allowance, it needs to wait for reset. Review the workload before the next busy period.
Order up to 25 SIMs per order request, with fleet enquiries for larger quantities. Compatible eSIM devices can use a QR code delivered once the order is confirmed; physical SIMs are posted from the UK to addresses in Ireland and the rest of the EU, and any import charges on arrival are yours.
SIMs arrive inactive. Billing starts when you activate, or automatically 30 days after we despatch your SIM (30 days after it is issued, for an eSIM); we email you at least 5 days before. A switched-on SIM is billed each month, including while paused, until it is ceased. For a short gap between phases, keeping SIMs switched on is usually simplest. For a long gap, cease the SIMs that are not needed and activate fresh SIMs, at €2.49 each, when the next phase starts. Activating, pausing and moving SIMs covers the handover, while setting up a 4G router covers configuration at the next location.
Calculate each camera's uploads and viewing before deciding. A 5 GB plan is a fixed monthly allowance, not a promise to cover a whole site.
Unsolicited inbound connections need a static public IP or private networking. Check whether the camera instead uses an outbound connection to its own service.
Pausing stops data but not the monthly charge. For a short gap, keep the SIM on; for a long one, cease it and activate a new SIM, at €2.49, for the next phase.
