Teltonika FMB920 GPS Tracker SIM Card Setup

Device setup Published

Set up a ThingSIM data SIM in a Teltonika FMB920 vehicle tracker: SIM size and plan, inserting the micro SIM, the APN in Configurator or by SMS, roaming send periods and troubleshooting.

The Teltonika FMB920 is a small vehicle tracker used for fleet tracking and stolen-vehicle recovery. It uses 2G only. It takes a micro SIM, and the APN is set in Teltonika Configurator or by SMS.

Specifications and menu paths checked against Teltonika's own documentation on 3 November 2026; sources are listed at the end. Menus can move between firmware versions, so if yours differs, follow the manual for your version.

What the FMB920 Is

A compact GNSS tracker with an internal battery, sending position reports to a tracking platform over the mobile network. Teltonika lists it as a current product.

Which ThingSIM Suits the FMB920

Compatible on 2G. The FMB920 is a 2G GSM tracker (850, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz) with no 4G, LTE-M or NB-IoT. ThingSIM SIMs work on 2G, which stays on in the UK until 2033 at the latest. For new installs that need to last beyond that, choose a 4G model such as the FMC920. The FMB920 takes a micro SIM, so order a physical ThingSIM and push out the micro size.

Position reports are small. A tracker reporting every minute or two while driving usually fits in UK 4-network 50 MB at £0.90 a month; frequent reporting or firmware updates over the air may need 250 MB at £1.20. See choosing a SIM for a GPS tracker.

Insert the SIM

  1. Activate the SIM in the ThingSIM portal when you are ready to test; billing starts that day.
  2. Make sure the tracker is powered off.
  3. Remove the cover with a plastic pry tool, working from both sides.
  4. Push out the micro SIM from the trio card and insert it with the cut-off corner pointing forward into the slot.
  5. Refit the cover. If the SIM asks for a PIN, disable the PIN first or enter it in Teltonika Configurator under Security info.

Set the APN in Teltonika Configurator

  1. Connect the tracker to a computer and open Teltonika Configurator.
  2. In GPRS settings, make sure the GPRS context is enabled. In the APN field, enter the APN shown in your ThingSIM portal when you activate the SIM and leave the APN username and password blank.
  3. If the tracker is already installed, the same settings can be sent by SMS: two spaces, then setparam 2001:APN;2002:;2003: with the portal's APN after 2001:. Parameter 2001 is the APN, 2002 the username and 2003 the password.
  4. Set your tracking platform's server domain and port in the same section, then save the configuration to the device.
  5. Check the send periods in Data acquisition for Roaming and Unknown operators, not just Home. A ThingSIM connects as a roaming SIM, so the tracker uses the Roaming or Unknown settings.

Check It Is Working

Teltonika trackers have no dedicated data LED. The status LED blinks fast for a moment during modem activity and blinks every second in normal operation; the navigation LED stays on while there is no GNSS fix. The real test is the tracking platform: drive the vehicle and check positions arrive, then look at the SIM's usage in the ThingSIM portal.

Troubleshooting

  • Positions arrive at home but not now: the tracker is using its Roaming or Unknown send periods. Set them under Data acquisition.
  • No data at all: check the GPRS context is enabled and the operator is not on the Operator blacklist in GSM operator settings. Teltonika blocks data only on blacklisted operators.
  • Auto APN: the tracker has an Auto APN search (parameter 2025), on by default. If it picks the wrong APN, enter the portal's APN in parameter 2001.
  • Signal but no data: check the SIM is activated in the ThingSIM portal, the APN matches the one shown in the portal exactly with no spaces, and data roaming is allowed. Then work through signal but no data in order.
  • It worked, then stopped: look at the SIM's usage in the portal. A ThingSIM pauses when it reaches its monthly allowance; upgrade the plan straight away or wait for the reset.

Common Questions

Does a ThingSIM work in a Teltonika FMB920?

Yes. Insert the micro SIM, enter the APN shown in your ThingSIM portal in Configurator's GPRS settings (parameter 2001) and set send periods for Roaming and Unknown operators.

What size SIM does the FMB920 take?

A micro SIM, the middle size on the ThingSIM trio card.

Will the FMB920 keep working when 2G closes?

No. It has a 2G modem only, so it will stop connecting when UK 2G closes, which is due by 2033 at the latest. Plan to replace it with a 4G model such as the FMC920.
