Milesight UG65 LoRaWAN Gateway SIM Card Setup

Device setup Published

Set up a ThingSIM data SIM as the 4G backhaul of a Milesight UG65 LoRaWAN gateway: SIM size and plan, inserting the mini SIM, the cellular APN and roaming settings, and troubleshooting.

The Milesight UG65 is an indoor LoRaWAN gateway that collects readings from battery sensors and sends them on over Ethernet, Wi-Fi or 4G. On the cellular version a ThingSIM is the 4G uplink, set up in the gateway's web interface.

Specifications and menu paths checked against Milesight's own documentation on 3 November 2026; sources are listed at the end. Menus can move between firmware versions, so if yours differs, follow the manual for your version.

What the UG65 Is

An 8-channel LoRaWAN gateway with a built-in network server, for buildings, farms and campuses. Cellular versions have “-L” in the model code, for example UG65-L04EU or UG65-L08GL. Milesight has announced end of life for the external-antenna UG65-L04EU-868M-EA from July 2025, with UG65-L08GL-868M-EA as its replacement.

Which ThingSIM Suits the UG65

Compatible. Milesight lists LTE bands 1, 3, 7, 8, 20 and 28 for its L04EU module and a wider set including 1, 3, 7, 8 and 20 for L08GL, covering the 4G bands used by all four UK networks. The gateway takes one mini SIM (2FF), so order a physical ThingSIM and use it at the largest size. No eSIM is listed.

LoRaWAN sensor traffic is small. Most gateways fit in UK 4-network 250 MB at £1.20 a month; check usage in the portal after the first month, as firmware updates and remote management add to it.

Insert the SIM

  1. Activate the SIM in the ThingSIM portal when you are ready to test; billing starts that day.
  2. Power the gateway off. Milesight says the SIM slot is not hot-pluggable.
  3. Open the protective cover on the back with a screwdriver and insert the mini SIM in the correct orientation, as marked by the slot. Press the card to eject it later.
  4. Refit the cover, check the cellular antennas are connected and power the gateway on.

Set Up Mobile Data on the UG65

  1. Log in to the gateway's web interface and go to Network → Interface → Cellular → Cellular Setting.
  2. Make sure the cellular interface is enabled. In the APN field, enter the APN shown in your ThingSIM portal when you activate the SIM, leave the username and password blank and set Authentication Type to None.
  3. Switch Roaming on. A ThingSIM connects to UK networks as a roaming SIM and will not connect with roaming off.
  4. Leave PIN Code empty unless the SIM has a PIN set.
  5. Click Save, then Apply.

Check It Is Working

Status → Cellular shows the register status, the network (ISP), network type and signal level, and Network Status shows Connected. The LTE LED blinks slowly once registered and stays on once the data connection is up.

Troubleshooting

  • Registered but not connected: check that Roaming is on in Cellular Setting; it is the most common cause on Milesight gateways.
  • Unsure which module you have: the model code on the label (L04EU or L08GL) tells you; both cover the UK 4G bands.
  • Signal but no data: check the SIM is activated in the ThingSIM portal, the APN matches the one shown in the portal exactly with no spaces, and data roaming is allowed. Then work through signal but no data in order.
  • It worked, then stopped: look at the SIM's usage in the portal. A ThingSIM pauses when it reaches its monthly allowance; upgrade the plan straight away or wait for the reset.

Common Questions

Does a ThingSIM work in a Milesight UG65?

Yes, in the cellular version. Insert the mini SIM, enter the APN shown in your ThingSIM portal under Network → Interface → Cellular and switch Roaming on.

How much data does a LoRaWAN gateway use?

Usually little: sensor packets are small. Start on 250 MB a month, £1.20 on UK 4-network, and check the first month's usage in the portal.

What size SIM does the UG65 take?

A mini SIM (2FF), the largest size on the ThingSIM trio card.
