Choosing a SIM for a GPS tracker

Use-case guides

Estimate tracker data from report size and frequency, check SMS commands and choose coverage for the places it travels.

For a GPS tracker sending small position reports, start with UK 4-network 50 MB at £0.90 per active SIM per month. Check the tracker's mobile compatibility and platform requirements first, then calculate its data from report size and reporting interval. A tracker that sends more often or downloads updates can need a larger allowance.

ThingSIM supplies the mobile connection, not the tracking application. Confirm that your chosen tracker and platform accept a separately supplied SIM before ordering. The vehicle tracking page covers the use case for one vehicle or a handful.

Calculate reports before choosing a plan

Ask the tracker supplier for the complete data used per report, including the connection overhead where known. If you only know the size of the position information itself, treat that as an incomplete estimate. Account for messages beyond the regular position reports, including events and any platform communication.

Here is a worked example using an assumed 1 KB per report and one report every five minutes, all day. These numbers illustrate the method; they are not a claim about your tracker. Use decimal units for this estimate, with 1,000 KB treated as 1 MB.

Step Calculation Result
Reports per hour 60 ÷ 5 12
Reports per day 12 × 24 288
Reports in 30 days 288 × 30 8,640
Data for those reports 8,640 × 1 KB 8.64 MB
Assumed additional traffic Example allowance for other messages 10 MB
Estimated total 8.64 MB + 10 MB 18.64 MB

That example fits within 50 MB with space above the estimate. Change the interval to one minute and the reports alone become 43.2 MB over 30 days. Adding the same assumed 10 MB gives 53.2 MB, already above the smallest allowance.

The lesson is to calculate the settings you will actually use. Do not copy an estimate from a tracker that reports only while moving if yours reports throughout the day. How much data a device needs explains how to check assumptions against measured use.

Check SMS configuration and commands

ThingSIM supports SMS. Some trackers use SMS commands for configuration or control, but the tracker manufacturer defines the command format and supported functions. Follow the exact model's manual and do not send a command copied from a similar-looking device.

Check how the tracker confirms a setting change. After changing a reporting interval, verify that new reports arrive at the expected frequency in the tracking platform. A command being sent is not by itself proof that the device applied it.

Keep the APN and the tracking server settings distinct. The APN shown against the SIM in the ThingSIM portal configures mobile data. The tracker's destination address, account or identifier belongs to the tracking service and must also be correct.

Choose coverage for the route

UK 4-network roams across O2, Vodafone, Three and EE, using whichever is strongest where the device is. That is a useful starting choice for equipment travelling between sites because the best network can differ along the route. Test the fitted tracker in the places that matter to your work.

Check the final mounting position as well as the location. A successful test on a workbench does not establish the result after installation in a vehicle or equipment enclosure. Ask the supplier about positioning and supported mobile bands for the exact hardware version.

For travel outside the UK, discuss the route before ordering. Europe roaming plans exist and are priced per project. Using an IoT SIM in Europe covers that separate planning step; do not assume that choosing four UK networks answers an overseas coverage question.

Consider NB-IoT only with compatible equipment

ThingSIM supports NB-IoT. For a low-power tracker designed to use it, confirm the device's requirements and intended deployment with the supplier before selecting the setup. Support for NB-IoT does not establish a battery-life figure or make an incompatible tracker work.

Choose the reporting pattern around the information you need. Less frequent reporting changes the data calculation, but check the operational trade-off with whoever uses the tracking platform. Avoid promising a particular battery duration from the SIM choice alone.

Activate and measure

SIMs arrive inactive. Activate in the portal when you are ready to install and test; billing begins that day. Enter the displayed APN, confirm a fresh report arrives and review portal usage after representative operation.

If usage reaches the allowance, the SIM pauses rather than charging overage. Upgrade immediately, paying only the difference for the rest of the month, or wait for reset. Running a small SIM fleet helps keep vehicle names and SIM records matched as you add trackers.

Common questions

Does ThingSIM include a tracking platform?

ThingSIM supplies the SIM connection. Choose a compatible tracker and tracking service separately, and confirm their SIM requirements.

Can I send SMS commands to the tracker?

ThingSIM supports SMS, but the tracker determines which commands it accepts. Follow the exact model's instructions.

Is 50 MB enough for frequent position updates?

Calculate report size multiplied by report count and add other traffic. In the worked example, moving from five-minute to one-minute reporting takes the total above 50 MB.
