TP-Link Archer NX200 SIM Card Setup

Device setup Published

Set up a ThingSIM data SIM in a TP-Link Archer NX200 5G router: SIM size and plan, inserting the nano SIM, the Mobile WAN APN profile and data roaming, and troubleshooting.

The TP-Link Archer NX200 is a 5G router for small sites and backup lines. It takes one nano SIM. A ThingSIM connects on 4G once a custom APN profile is created and data roaming is switched on.

Specifications and menu paths checked against TP-Link's own documentation on 3 November 2026; sources are listed at the end. Menus can move between firmware versions, so if yours differs, follow the manual for your version.

What the Archer NX200 Is

A 5G CPE router with Wi-Fi and Ethernet, sold in several hardware versions (V1 to V4). It can use the mobile connection or an Ethernet WAN.

Which ThingSIM Suits the Archer NX200

Compatible on 4G. TP-Link lists LTE bands 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20, 28 and 32 (FDD) and 38, 40, 41, 42 and 43 (TDD), covering the 4G bands used by all four UK networks. ThingSIM plans are 4G, LTE-M, NB-IoT and 2G, so the router will connect on 4G rather than 5G. It has one nano SIM slot and no eSIM: order a physical ThingSIM and push out the nano size.

For a backup line or a few devices, UK 4-network 5 GB at £8.85 a month is the usual starting point. ThingSIM plans top out at 5 GB, so they are not a replacement for everyday home broadband.

Insert the SIM

  1. Activate the SIM in the ThingSIM portal when you are ready to test; billing starts that day.
  2. With the router unplugged, push out the nano SIM from the trio card.
  3. With the gold contacts facing right, insert the nano SIM into the slot until it clicks.
  4. Connect the power adapter and turn the router on.

Set Up Mobile Data on the Archer NX200

Log in at tplinkmodem.net (or 192.168.1.1). These steps follow TP-Link's NX200 user guide REV1.0.0; the V4 hardware has a newer web guide, so labels may differ slightly.

  1. Go to Advanced → Network → Mobile WAN and click Create Profile.
  2. Give the profile a name, set the PDP type to IPv4 and choose the Static APN type so the APN field appears. Enter the APN shown in your ThingSIM portal when you activate the SIM. Leave the username and password blank and set Authentication Type to None.
  3. Click OK and select the new profile.
  4. On the same page, make sure Mobile Data is on and enable Data Roaming. A ThingSIM connects to UK networks as a roaming SIM.
  5. If the SIM asks for a PIN, use Advanced → Network → PIN Management. TP-Link says the router needs a SIM without a PIN lock.

Check It Is Working

Basic → Network Map shows the connection. The Signal Strength LED is white above 75%, green from 50 to 75% and yellow below 50%. Then load a page from a connected device and check usage in the ThingSIM portal.

Troubleshooting

  • Shows 4G, never 5G: expected. ThingSIM plans use 4G.
  • Connected but no data: check Data Roaming on the Mobile WAN page first.
  • Signal but no data: check the SIM is activated in the ThingSIM portal, the APN matches the one shown in the portal exactly with no spaces, and data roaming is allowed. Then work through signal but no data in order.
  • It worked, then stopped: look at the SIM's usage in the portal. A ThingSIM pauses when it reaches its monthly allowance; upgrade the plan straight away or wait for the reset.

Common Questions

Yes, on 4G. Insert the nano SIM, create a custom APN profile on the Mobile WAN page with the APN shown in your ThingSIM portal, and enable Data Roaming.

Will the NX200 use 5G with a ThingSIM?

No. ThingSIM plans are 4G, LTE-M, NB-IoT and 2G, so the NX200 connects on 4G.

What size SIM does the Archer NX200 take?

A nano SIM, pushed out of the ThingSIM trio card.
