Order 1 GBSet up a ThingSIM data SIM in a Teltonika RUT956: which SIM size and plan, inserting the SIM, the RutOS APN and roaming settings, SIM failover and troubleshooting.
The Teltonika RUT956 is a dual-SIM 4G router with Wi-Fi, GNSS, serial ports and I/O for utilities, transport and industrial sites. It takes a mini SIM, and a ThingSIM connects on whichever of O2, Vodafone, Three and EE is strongest once the APN is set in RutOS.
Specifications and menu paths checked against Teltonika's own documentation on 3 November 2026; sources are listed at the end. Menus can move between firmware versions, so if yours differs, follow the manual for your version.
A dual-SIM router with Wi-Fi, GNSS, RS232 and RS485, and digital I/O. It is a current model and replaced the RUT955.
Compatible. It supports LTE Cat 4, with 3G and 2G fallback. Teltonika lists LTE bands 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20 and 40 (or 1, 3, 7, 8, 20, 28, 38, 40 and 41, depending on the version) for the versions sold in Europe, which cover the 4G bands used by all four UK networks. The RUT956 has two mini SIM (2FF) slots, so order a physical ThingSIM and use the mini size. Some versions add an eSIM.
For a kiosk, vending machine, meter or card terminal, UK 4-network 1 GB at £2.40 a month is a safe start; telemetry alone often fits in 250 MB at £1.20. Check usage in the portal after the first month.
Two-SIM models use one SIM at a time. Rules are set on the SIM Switch tab of Network → Mobile, with conditions such as weak signal, no network, network denied, data connection failure and data limit. Do not enable the On roaming condition for a ThingSIM: it would switch away from the SIM every time it connects, because a ThingSIM always roams. One UK 4-network ThingSIM already uses O2, Vodafone, Three and EE, so a second SIM mainly helps where a different provider or a private APN is wanted. Each active SIM is billed separately.
Status → Network → Mobile shows the SIM card state, operator, network type, connected band, signal quality (RSSI, RSRP, RSRQ, SINR) and the data connection state, with buttons to restart the connection or switch SIM slot. Teltonika RMS shows the same remotely, and the ThingSIM portal shows the SIM's usage.
Yes. The RUT956's LTE bands cover all four UK networks. Put the SIM in, switch Auto APN off and enter the APN shown in your ThingSIM portal, and leave Deny data roaming off.
A mini SIM (2FF), the largest size on the ThingSIM trio card.
Yes, it supports 2G as well as 3G and 4G, and ThingSIM SIMs work on 2G. UK 2G networks are due to close by 2033 at the latest.
Checked on 3 November 2026.
Roams across all four UK networks and uses whichever is strongest where the device is.
