Teltonika RUT240 SIM Card Setup

Device setup Published

Set up a ThingSIM data SIM in a Teltonika RUT240: which SIM size and plan, inserting the SIM, the RutOS APN and roaming settings and troubleshooting.

The Teltonika RUT240 is a compact 4G router with Wi-Fi for vending machines, cameras and signs. It takes a mini SIM, and a ThingSIM connects on whichever of O2, Vodafone, Three and EE is strongest once the APN is set in RutOS.

Specifications and menu paths checked against Teltonika's own documentation on 3 November 2026; sources are listed at the end. Menus can move between firmware versions, so if yours differs, follow the manual for your version.

What the RUT240 Is

A compact router with two Ethernet ports and Wi-Fi. Teltonika ended ordering on 31 July 2023 and supports it until 31 July 2028; the RUT200 replaces it.

Which ThingSIM Suits the RUT240

Compatible. It supports LTE Cat 4, with 3G and 2G fallback. Teltonika lists LTE bands 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 20 (or 1, 3, 7, 8, 20 and 28, depending on the version) for the versions sold in Europe, which cover the 4G bands used by all four UK networks. The RUT240 has one mini SIM (2FF) slot, so order a physical ThingSIM and use the mini size. It has no eSIM.

For a kiosk, vending machine, meter or card terminal, UK 4-network 1 GB at £2.40 a month is a safe start; telemetry alone often fits in 250 MB at £1.20. Check usage in the portal after the first month.

Insert the SIM

  1. Activate the SIM in the ThingSIM portal when you are ready to test; billing starts that day.
  2. With the power disconnected, push the SIM holder button with the SIM needle and pull the holder out.
  3. Place the mini SIM in the holder as the drawing in Teltonika's quick start guide shows, slide it back in, and fit the antennas.
  4. Connect the power. On sites with heavy vibration, Teltonika suggests a thin layer of dielectric grease on the SIM contacts.

Set Up Mobile Data in RutOS

The RUT240 is documented on Teltonika's older RutOS WebUI layout, where the APN is on the WAN page rather than the Mobile page. Teltonika keeps a separate manual for much older firmware; update the firmware if your menus do not match.

  1. Log in to the WebUI at http://192.168.1.1. If you cannot see the settings below, switch on Advanced WebUI mode with the button at the top.
  2. Go to Network → WAN and click Edit on the mobile interface.
  3. In General Setup, switch Auto APN off. In the APN / Custom APN field, enter the APN shown in your ThingSIM portal when you activate the SIM. Set Authentication Type to NONE and PDP Type to IPv4.
  4. Save, then go to Network → Mobile and make sure Deny data roaming is off. A ThingSIM always connects to UK networks as a roaming SIM.
  5. Leave the PIN empty unless the SIM has one, and Save & Apply.

Check It Is Working

Status → Network → Mobile shows the SIM card state, operator, network type, connected band, signal quality (RSSI, RSRP, RSRQ, SINR) and the data connection state, with buttons to restart the connection or switch SIM slot. Teltonika RMS shows the same remotely, and the ThingSIM portal shows the SIM's usage.

Troubleshooting

  • Operator shows but data does not connect: check Deny data roaming is off and Auto APN is off with the portal's APN entered on the interface for the slot the SIM is actually in.
  • SIM not detected: power off, reseat the SIM in the holder the way the quick start drawing shows, and check it is the mini size.
  • Signal but no data: check the SIM is activated in the ThingSIM portal, the APN matches the one shown in the portal exactly with no spaces, and data roaming is allowed. Then work through signal but no data in order.
  • It worked, then stopped: look at the SIM's usage in the portal. A ThingSIM pauses when it reaches its monthly allowance; upgrade the plan straight away or wait for the reset.

Common Questions

Does a ThingSIM work in a Teltonika RUT240?

Yes. The RUT240's LTE bands cover all four UK networks. Put the SIM in, enter the APN shown in your ThingSIM portal, and leave Deny data roaming off.

What size SIM does the RUT240 take?

A mini SIM (2FF), the largest size on the ThingSIM trio card.

Does this router fall back to 2G?

Yes, it supports 2G as well as 3G and 4G, and ThingSIM SIMs work on 2G. UK 2G networks are due to close by 2033 at the latest.
