# M2M SIM cards for machines and devices

> What an M2M SIM card is, what to look for in one, and ThingSIM's UK multi-network M2M SIMs, billed only from the day each is switched on.

An M2M (machine to machine) SIM card is a data SIM for a device rather than a phone: an alarm communicator, a card machine, a tracker, a meter, a router or a camera. "IoT SIM" is the newer name for the same thing. Every ThingSIM is an M2M SIM.

ThingSIM M2M SIMs are ordered online by card, arrive switched off, and are billed only from the day each one is activated. UK plans roam across all four UK networks, or three of them for less, from £0.65 a month per SIM.

## What makes a good M2M SIM

**Several networks, not one.** A machine stays where it was installed and lives with the signal there. A [multi-network SIM](/multi-network-sim) uses whichever network is strongest at that spot. ThingSIM's UK 4-network plan roams across O2, Vodafone, Three and EE.

**The right technology.** M2M devices use 4G data, LTE-M or NB-IoT, and some are configured or report by SMS. Every ThingSIM supports all four. See [LTE-M vs NB-IoT](/lte-m-vs-nb-iot).

**Small allowances at small prices.** Most machines send little data. An alarm communicator or a card machine often fits in 50 MB a month; a router or a camera needs much more. The [data guide](/how-much-data-does-my-device-need) works through common devices.

**No surprise bills.** A device that misbehaves should not run up overage. A ThingSIM pauses at its allowance; upgrade it straight away from the portal or wait for the monthly reset.

**Billing that suits stock.** Installers often hold SIMs ahead of jobs. A ThingSIM costs nothing until it is switched on, and a failed card payment never stops SIMs already working in the field.

**A way to reach the device.** Every SIM gets a private IP address. If you need to connect to the device from outside, add a [static public IP](/static-ip-sim-card) for £8 a month, or use a private APN, IPSec VPN or cloud interconnect from the [extras](/extras).

## Common questions

### Is an M2M SIM the same as an IoT SIM?

Yes. M2M is the older name for the same thing: a data SIM for a device rather than a phone.

### Can I order M2M SIMs online?

Yes, up to 25 SIMs, paid by card, with no contract. For larger fleets, [talk to us](/contact#topic=fleet).

### Do M2M SIMs do SMS?

ThingSIM's do, as well as 4G data, LTE-M and NB-IoT.

### Can I use an M2M SIM outside the UK?

Europe (EU roaming) is priced per project. See [IoT SIM cards for Europe](/iot-sim-in-europe).
